Whenever you design a large 3D printed configuration, you have to have the appropriate fasteners in order to keep the smaller components all together. There are several different methods of fastening that are used in the industry and it’s important to understand how they work.
When it comes to fastening, this is maybe the most commonly employed method. These threaded inserts help provide a surface for Grade 8 steel screws which eliminates stripping or cross threading. Because the surface it provides is robust, it also helps to reduce wear and tear. There are two main types of this fastening:
- Heat-set threading
- External threading
A hex nut can be fastened by first designing a slot in the printing and then putting the nut in a cavity at right angles. This provides strength and is also easy to install.
Grooved Clevis Pin
Another fastening method is that of a grooved clevis pin which acts as a hinge pin and doesn’t require much clearance over the ridged end, if any.
When you need to stitch small components together or create hinge joints, using blind rivets is a great choice.
